Value Study: Portraits

Here are a few artists to check out, who make work that explores value & portraiture:

Ben Durham is a contemporary NY artist who creates mug shots of childhood friends and acquaintances, using text: his own recounted stories of the individuals to create a range of value.

American artist, Chuck Close, who we looked at in class has been making unique photorealist portraits for decades. Through the years, his technique has become more abstract and expressive.

Tuesday, Jan. 25th: Please bring your 4" x 6" portrait to class.
- Portrait must have a full range of values (black, white, and at least 6 grays).
I will explain how to enlarge your image onto Bristol in class.

Final Value Portrait due: Tuesday, Feb. 1st- at the beginning of class
(please note: Thursday, Jan. 27th will not be an in-class work day for this project)

Non-Objective Line Drawing

While browsing the internet earlier today, I came across the work of Justine Ashbee, an artist and curator from Seattle. Her work seems inspiring to our current non-objective line drawing project.

Remember to bring photocopies of your 7"x7" drawing to class on Tuesday. Have a great weekend!
